Greetings from High Above the Fabulous Las Vegas Strip!

I just spent the last hour cursing and trying to populate my other blog (Editorial Explanations, check it out regularly...just not right now, since there won't be any new posts until I can get back to a real computer), without much luck. The sticking point is images -- I can't seem to get them into the posts using my iPad, and that's all the computer I brought this time out.

This is deeply frustrating, since I know that I was able to blog -- including images, though the layout got a bit wonky -- last year from my conferences, and I hate to think that I've gotten technologically dumber in the past year. (I'm going to blame software updates, and not my fallible memory, if anyone asks.)

Anyway, I'm here in Las Vegas -- that most quintessentially American city, where everything is larger and flashier than a healthy person would want it to be -- and it, as usual, exacerbates my usual grumpy tendencies. I don't like people much to begin with, and, in Vegas, there are so many loathesome types of people -- ball-capped yahoos, pneumatic young women on the make, dull middle-aged losers on expense accounts, and far more corn-fed god-fearing middle Americans with kids in tow than I would have expected. (Especially in a casino hotel whose room keys promote its topless beach club.) I recognize that this is entirely my problem, but that doesn't actually help much.

The conference went well, as such things go: it's embarassing but wonderful to see how many financial professionals (here at IMA and at other shows, like last week's ACFE) know and respect Wiley as a publisher; they know our name and associate it with authoritative content and useful works, which is a tremendous compliment and goad to live up to those expectations. (Now, if only everyone were buying books the way they were a few years back, everything would be hunky-dory.)

Tomorrow is one of those unfortunate days eaten up entirely by travel that happen when going from left coast to right; my flight isn't until 11-something, so I don't get into JFK airport until nearly 8, so the day will be just about a total loss.

Now, I expect none of you actually care about any of this -- except perhaps my mother, who does read this blog; Hi, Mom! -- but inaction feeds on inaction as action feeds on action, so I want to get my fingers typing into this little Blogger box more often again, and build from there back to something worth reading. (I've got a long essay that's been half-written for nearly year; I need to get back to that, and everything else I want to do.)

I could waste time and space here attempting to be lyrical about the planes taking off from McCarran -- I can see it out of my 31st-floor window -- and the helicopters that similarly never stop buzzing by, and the mountains in the distance, and the city and suburbs bracketed by those landmarks, but I think I've rambled pointlessly long enough. The next blog entry should be from a real computer, back in my home, and, with any luck, it will also have more substance than this one.

FBI arrests 24 hackers in $205M credit card fraud scheme

The FBI has arrested six suspected British hackers accused of masterminding a global network of online fraudsters trading in stolen bank and credit card information.
They were among 24 suspects held across four continents yesterday following a painstaking two-year undercover sting, described as the biggest of its kind to be launched against financial cybercriminals.
The international gang is believed to have coordinated a multi-million pound internet black market trading in illegal hacking software and stolen personal information.
The operation foiled suspected fraudsters carrying out 'carding' schemes in America, Europe, Asia and Australia and protected more than 400,000 potential victims losing £131 million from debit and credit cards, the FBI said.
Authorities from 30 different countries are believed to have been involved in the operation.
A total of 11 people were arrested in the US, while suspects were held in 12 other countries including the UK, Norway, Italy and Japan.
The arrests came after undercover FBI investigators set up a bogus website where fraudsters involved in carding schemes could buy and sell stolen information and programmes.
Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said: 'The coordinated law enforcement actions taken by an unprecedented number of countries around the world demonstrate that hackers and fraudsters cannot count on being able to prowl the internet in anonymity and with impunity, even across national boundaries.
'Clever computer criminals operating behind the supposed veil of the Internet are still subject to the long arm of the law.'

Guma Aguiar Supported Sex-Soliciting Rabbi Before Disappearing

Late on Tuesday night, a boat belonging to Guma Aguiar washed up on Fort Lauderdale beach, engines running, the cell phone and wallet of the Floridian Jewish multimillionaire reportedly still onboard. Since then, people have speculated: Was it a dead-of-night escape plot to keep his mother from declaring him mentally incompetent, as she'd tried to do in the past, or his uncle from getting the money he made on a Texas oilfield? Was it a hit by the Israeli Mafia? A simple drowning? At this point, nobody knows -- but the first stories brought up his erratic past of clashes with police, high-roller braggadocio, and stints in a mental institution for bipolar disorder just after he claimed, in a 2010 interview, to have personally given sanctuary at his home to captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
Much of this is detailed in a January 2010 profile of Aguiar, "Prodigal Son," in Tablet. It was published a day after Aguiar was committed to a mental facility in Tel Aviv, but the main story involved the strict process of converting people to Judaism.
Aguiar was committed in 2010 to a mental facility in Tel Aviv; his family said it was because of the mental anguish he had suffered during years of legal disputes with his uncle, Thomas Kaplan, over the proceeds from a huge Texas oil and gas field that the two had bought and sold.
The two had also become involved with Leib Tropper, a New York-area rabbi who held ultra-Orthodox beliefs. Tropper said that the only person who could allow somebody to convert to Judaism was a rabbi who did not believe that the universe predated the Jewish calendar, according to Tablet. A foundation in memory of Kaplan's deceased mother, administrated by Aguiar from his Fort Lauderdale home, paid millions to Tropper's business venture, supporting his strict beliefs; court filings show that Tropper wanted more. Later, Aguiar moved to Jerusalem and bought a soccer team with his insane wealth from the oilfields.

In December 2009, the New York Post, following a scoop by the Failed Messiah blog, revealed a seamy tape recording of Tropper, Aguiar's beneficiary, trying to get a Houston woman named Shannon Orand to have sex with his buddies in exchange for his blessing of her attempted conversion to Judaism. From the Post:

Tropper, who calls the woman "darling" and "cutie pie," talks about his own love affair with her at one point, saying: "I want to squeeze you."

He also fantasized about rape. "I could role-play a rape with you but I couldn't actually rape you -- you know what I'm saying, darling -- does that make sense?" he asks.

A month later, Aguiar went off to the mental institution, for apparently unrelated reasons. His own notoriety and story -- an evangelical Christian turned playboy Zionist -- attracts rumor and speculation, especially after he's disappeared. With each strange connection he left behind, there's another question about why he vanished. The hunt for Aguiar continues even though the Coast Guard has called off its search. We'll be taking a few more excursions into his past over the coming days.

Ritual objects of the kind that were taken sometime within the past week from the Congregation Ahavath Shalom synagogue in Forest Hills, Queens
RELIGIOUS ARTIFACTS were swiped from a Queens synagogue sometime in the past week, and the thief is still on the lam, cops said.

There were no signs of forced entry, police said.
There was a similar theft in February at another synagogue — Congregation Ohel Rachel Degel Israel Synagogue in Kew Gardens Hills — less than 2 miles away.

Bloomberg rigs wacky A/C to keep his SUV chilled

NEW YORK - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to maintain his politically-correct credentials on global warming -- but hates to get into a hot car when he leaves an air-conditioned building.
The solution his aides came up with could easily have doubled as a stunt on David Letterman's show.
In full view of bemused tourists and other passersby Tuesday, workers performed what looked like a comedy routine -- they hoisted a standard room air conditioner to a side window of one of the mayor's SUVs parked in the City Hall lot to see if it would fit.
If the strange plan gets a green light, the units would be plugged into electrical outlets and cause less pollution than running the vehicles' own air conditioners (A/Cs) on an idling engine.
"This is an experiment to be used on extremely hot days like the types we saw last week," mayoral spokesman Stu Loeser said. "Even with the vehicles parked in the shade, the temperatures inside can quickly rise to more than 100 degrees [38C]."
The mayor's two Chevy Suburbans have been on cooling restriction since July 2009, when reporters spotted them all around town idling with the A/Cs on for several minutes at a time.
Bloomberg quickly apologized for the gaffe and ordered his security detail to obey the city's three-minute idling restriction.
But, officials said, they still wanted to chill out the vehicles for the mayor, the cops who protect him and the heavy load of communications equipment they say might otherwise overheat.
"There is far less emissions corresponding to the power of a single air conditioner on the grid than idling a V-8 engine," Loeser said.

Massive Response at NJ Port After Stowaways Suspected in Cargo Container

The U.S. Coast Guard suspects there are stowaways in a container that was loaded on a ship docked at Port Newark in New Jersey Wednesday.
Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe says the container was loaded aboard The Villa D'Aquarius in India. The manifest says the container was carrying machine parts to be unloaded in Norfolk, Va.
Rowe says a boarding party heard sounds consistent with people coming from the container, but opted not to open the container at sea in order to control the situation.
Ship crew members told the Coast Guard that there were several stowaways on board, an official familiar with the situation tells NBC 4 New York.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were notified to meet the vessel at the dock. Chopper 4 captured video of a large response.
A law enforcement official at the scene told NBC 4 New York he believes "it will take a significant amount of time" to reach the container where the alleged stowaways are. That official didn't know how many were allegedly aboard.
The ship began its voyage several weeks ago in Pakistan. Rowe says its last port was in Egypt.
