2012 Van Vogt Award Nominees

To contact us Click HERE
I was not aware that there was an award named after the man who invented the fix-up, but Locus says that one exists, and has been sponsored by three parties: Winnipeg Science Fiction Association; Conadian, the 1994 Worldcon; and Science Fiction Winnipeg. [1] I presume, though the Locus announcement doesn't say, that it's for SFF novels by Canadian authors -- it could be a somewhat different set of criteria (some connection to Winnipeg, for example).

The nominees for the 2012 award are:

  • Alphanauts, Brian J. Clarke (Edge)
  • The Other, Matthew Hughes (Underland)
  • Lady of Mazes, Karl Schroeder (Tor)
Congratulations to the nominees, and a winner will presumably be announced in the fullness of time.

[1] It's a bit odd to see a twenty-year-old Worldcon still running around organizing things, but I suppose that's hard to get out of your blood.

Frank's Chop House - Chicken Fried Steak

So after many years of driving by a small green building on Westheimer and Weslayan, Leaney and I finally decided to try Frank's Chop House, after repeatedly hearing how good their chicken fried steak was.  I'm typically not the biggest fan of "gourmet" CFS, but I thought I might as well give this place a try (celebrating finally taking a job offer), especially since it was HALF PRICE WINE NIGHT (all wine bottles are half price on Sundays).  We started out with a BBQ shrimp appetizer, which was good but WAY overpriced at $15 for 5 whole shrimp, served with the heads.  For our main course, Leaney enjoyed the shrimp and grits while I went with the CFS.  To my surprise, this thing was pretty legit.  It was "full-sized" (many nicer places give you a smaller cut), and there wasn't an excessive amount of batter.  The batter was seasoned well with a very distinct taste, and I thought it was a damn good CFS (still not as good as Mason Jar or Luby's).  My only complaint is that they served it atop a bed of veggies.  Who eats veggies w/ their CFS?  More mashed potatoes please....

Chef Chang's Salmon from Sam's Club

Leaney and I grabbed a Sam's club membership a few weeks ago off Livingsocial for $20.  Along with the membership, we got a rotisserie chicken, Sam's club pizza and a bunch of other random shit (so it basically paid for itself!).  I finally had a chance to cook one of the frozen salmon filets that I bought over there...and the results were JUST OK.  I rubbed the salmon down in a garlic herb seasoning, and then marinated it in a BBQ glaze.  After baking the sucker for 14 minutes at 400 deg, I served it up with some poblano corn rice that I picked up at HEB.  The rice was garbage, but the Trader Joe's chicken tikka samosa was absolutely fantastic!  Long story short, the meal you see here is what you get if you shop at HEB, Sam's and Trader Joe's.  On a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 7.  The salmon wasn't as fresh as I would have liked.

Trader Joe's Pizza (Trader Giotto)

This frozen Trader Joe's pizza was just OK.  Even after I added a bunch of fresh cheese and tomatoes on my side of the pizza, it was just OK.  I THINK these bad boys are "organic", but I KNOW they are overpriced at nearly $4 a pop.  Give me a party pizza any day!!! ... or 4...since party pizzas are only 99 cents.  I do find it funny that they package the Italian food with the name "Trader Giotto's"....and the Chinese food with the name "Trader Ming's".

Smashburger - BBQ Burger

This smashburger topped with fried onions, cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce was one of the best burgers I've had in a while.  I almost went for the new Baja burger (topped with pepperjack cheese, fresh jalapenos and avacados), but I couldn't pass on following my heart and craving.  We also had a side of the sweet potato smash fries, which were pretty good...but not amazing.  Great meal, especially considering 2 burgers and a side of fries only ran us about $7 after using a Groupon.

The last winter break of my 2 year hiatus from the work world has been pretty football filled thus far.  Great bowl season going head 2 head against the man they call Skiddy (crushing him in an alternating bowl pickem at an 84% clip).  Only a few days of R&R left until my last semester of b-school!

Pilot David Zehntner
LABELLE, Fla. — Authorities say a Florida man flying home from North Carolina caught a man stealing a trailer while piloting his plane over his own home.
The News-Press reports that David Zehntner was flying over his home in LaBelle Sunday when he saw a truck in his driveway. He lowered his altitude to get a closer look and saw a man attaching Zehntner's trailer to the truck.
Zehntner followed the truck and called the Glades County Sheriff's Office from the air. Glades deputies contacted the Lee County Sheriff's Office, which found the truck as it headed into Charlotte County.
Gary Haines, 59, of Virginia, was arrested and charged with grand theft. He was released Monday from the Charlotte County Jail on $2,500 bond. It's not clear whether he's retained an attorney.

Hillary Clinton Leaves the hospital

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been released from New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Wednesday after spending three days undergoing treatment for a blood clot in her head.
Her release came just hours after her husband Bill Clinton emerged from the hospital, flashing a reassuring smile to seemingly signal that his wife Hillary was on the mend marking a turnaround from the anguish the couple's daughter, Chelsea, displayed on Monday after she visited her mom in the Washington Heights area hospital.
The Secretary of State, 65, has been hospitalized since Sunday when her doctors discovered a blood clot in her head, in a vein behind her right ear that helps carry blood away from the brain. She is being treated with blood thinners to help dissolve the clot and doctors say she will make a full recovery.
Hillary Clinton was admitted to the hospital on Sunday after an MRI revealed the clot.
Her doctors revealed the condition on Monday, causing alarm over Secretary Clinton's health after she suffered a concussion after she fell and hit her head on December 9.
In the Monday statement, Dr. Lisa Bardack, of the Mt. Kisco Medical Group, and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi, from George Washington University, said the clot, 'did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage.'
Clinton is being treated with blood thinners to help dissolve the clot and her doctors assured the public that their patient was 'making excellent progress.'
But when a photo emerged of the former first daughter, 32, full of anxiety as she visited her mother at the hospital on Monday.

Undercover IDF troops exposed in West Bank

Raid gone wrong: Palestinian sources in the West Bank reported Tuesday that riots broke out in the West Bank village of Tamoun, south of Jenin, after an undercover IDF unit operating in the area was exposed.
Three soldiers sustained mild injuries and were evacuated to a nearby hospital. At least eight Palestinians were injured.
The Palestinians said that the troops were disguised as vegetable vendors and and sought to seize two members of a militant group. According to the Palestinians, the troops apprehended Murad Uda, a known operative of the Islamic Jihad.
The force was apparently part of the Mistaarvim ("Arabized") Unit – an elite counter-terrorism force whose members serve in various IDF divisions.
According to reports, massive IDF forces were scrambled to the scene and are using crowd-control measures to contain the riot.
Checkpoints and blockades have been set up in the area, which has been declared a closed military zone.
According to an IDF source, the operation began at 10 am, when the force entered the village. At some point, a tactical decision was made to go from a cover operation to an overt one.
The troops, including Shin Bet officers and auxiliary forces, encompassed an area stretching 15 buildings.
The operation met a fierce response from the Palestinians, as a riot broke out and the locals began stoning the troops.
"This wasn’t an unusual operation," the source said. "The main person of interest was apprehended and the riots broke out only after the forces began sweeping the area, and when most of the troops were already out of the village."
Residents in the town of Tamoun said youths were tossing stones and bottles at Israeli troops, while the soldiers responded with what appears to be live fire.
Medical sources with the Red Crescent said that 30 Palestinians were wounded in the clash, from apparent rubber-bullet impact.
According to the Red Crescent, 100 Palestinians suffered light injuries from inhaling tear gas.

The Beersheba Magistrate's Court has accused a Rabbi from southern Israel, who served in the past as a Chabbad emissary in the city, of indecent acts against a 16-year-old boy, five years ago.
The indictment reveals that five years ago the rabbi drove under the influence in Beersheba and invited the teen to join him.

When the teen got into the car, the rabbi sexually harassed him and committed indecent acts.
