NEW YORK -A 79-year-old woman and her handicapped daughter were killed in a house fire in New City, New York late Wednesday night, said fire officials.
The fire broke out at approximately 11:30 p.m. inside 36 Stratford Place.
The flames spread quickly in the one-family house before they were put out about 45 minutes later, said fire officials.
A charred structure is all that remained of the house by Thursday morning.
"It was a heavy volume of fire. The fire was so far advanced that they could do only what they could do," said a New City fire official.
About 100 firefighters battled the flames.
It is not clear what sparked the fire.
A police investigation was underway into the cause.
